Table tennis, known as ping pang qiuin China, is a popular and revered game in China. For a long time it was really the only sport in China, sort of like football, basketball and baseball all rolled into one, except a hundred times more popular.
Table tennis is considered the national sport in China and has been ingrained in its culture. As such the government, go out of their way to heavily fund the sport. The sport is also part of the Chinese school curriculum and there are also holiday training camps for kids after school.
Chairman Mao Zedong meets famous Chinese table tennis players in 1962. Table tennis was invented in the United Kingdom, the heart of modern capitalism, in the 19th century as an “after-dinner parlor game for the upper class” – few would have imagined that the game would enjoy huge popularity in socialist China one hundred years later.
There are obviously a large number of reasons why China is so good at table tennis. It can’t be put down to one single factor or secret that only the Chinese employ. It’s also worth pointing out that research investigating the role of genetics in sport has found no evidence of certain races being genetically predisposed to excel at a certain type of sport.
Although its name may sound Chinese, the sport of table tennis (ping pong, Pīngpāng qiú, 乒乓球) did not originate in China; invented as an after-dinner diversion in late-19th century England, it made its way into China through the Western settlements via Japan and Korea only in 1901. Starting in the urban areas, it became popular elsewhere over the years.
